The seminar will focus on facade enhancements of existing buildings to align with Chicago's sustainability goals while increasing market value and occupant comfort. Enhancement types include thermal upgrades at window systems, re-cladding or over-cladding existing facades with newer unitized assemblies, building additions, lobby modernization, and amenity terraces. Attendees will learn about the process and technical challenges of these enhancements – along with enhancement ROI.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS


  1. Stanford Chan has extensive experience with consulting and monitoring on various exterior envelope and roofing systems. His experience includes new construction, re-clads, overclads, restoration, window replacement, and storefront replacement. He has extensive knowledge of the following systems: masonry (veneer and multi-wythe walls), curtain wall, window wall, and various roof systems. As Director of SOCOTEC’s Existing Buildings’ Division and the Roofing and Waterproofing Division, his current work includes managing a technical team of over 20, overseeing all projects while working closely with clients, writing specifications, preparing and detailing architectural drawings and reviewing shop drawings. 

 

  1. William D. Bast is a Principal and Regional Director at SOCOTEC with over 39 years of structural engineering experience. His areas of expertise include structural engineering of buildings and other structures, forensic engineering, building envelope evaluation and repair, peer reviews, and expert witness testimony. He is a Past President of the National Council of Structural Engineer Associations (NCSEA), a Past President of the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI), a former member of the AISC Committee on Specifications, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and is a Certified Peer Reviewer for the City of Chicago. 

 

  1. Lee Fink is a Senior Associate in the Building Envelope Division of SOCOTEC located in Chicago, Illinois. His areas of expertise include design and restoration of building enclosures which include curtain wall, glazing, metal cladding, concrete, masonry wall, and roofing systems. He is chair leader on the Technical Issues Knowledge Committee for the American Institute of Architects (AIA Chicago) and had previously served as an adjunct professor for the High-Performance Building Design course at Northwestern University.
